World War II
ROBERT WILLIAM BOHNERT was born on September 6, 1922 in Uniontown, Perry County, Missouri, the son of James Vincent and Sarah Helen Bohnert.
He was baptized at St. Joseph's Church in Apple Creek, Missouri on September 8, 1922. His sponsors were his uncle and aunt, William Ignatz and Rosalia (Wucher) Bohnert.
Robert's draft registration card lists him as living at 317 Coina Street (the house of his parents), Perryville, Missouri. The age at registration is listed as 19 years and the birth date is given as September 6, 1923. It is interesting to note that his birth year does not match that of either his Baptisimal records, obituary or military headstone.
The name and address of the "person who will always know your address" is given as John V. Bohnert, his father. Robert's place of employment at the time of registration is the International Shoe Company in Perryville, Missouri. Robert's signature is included on the registration, verifying the information as correct.
On September 22, 1942, Robert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His bootcamp was completed at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot in San Diego, California. The typical length of bootcamp in the early part of World War II was approximately 8 weeks.

James was living with his parents in Perryville on Coina Street (later Edgemont Blvd) and joined the Navy one year after the card below was written.

After completing bootcamp, Robert trained as a parachute rigger in support of airborn flyers. He was trained to pack, maintain and repair Marine Corps parachutes. In January of 1943, he departed for the Pacific theater. Robert recorded the places that he had been in the Pacific in the document below:
"Pinckney" refers to the U.S.S. Pinckney, an evacuation transport ship used by the Navy in World War II. "Nassau" refers to the U.S.S. Nassau, a CVE-16 aircraft carrier. Espiritu Santo was an island in the New Hebrides used by American naval and air forces as a large military supply and support base, naval harbor and air field. Russells Islands are two small islands located 30 miles northwest of Guadalcanal. In March of 1943, the islands were occupied by U.S. troops as part of the Solomen Islands campaign. Efate Island was another significant military base during the war containing three airstrip facilities and naval anchorages.

While still in the Marine Corps, Robert married Sylvia Schumer, daughter of Arnold and Lorena (Meister) Schumer, on October 3, 1944, at the Church of the Assumption in Perryville, Missouri. The priest that married them, Oscar L Huber, C.M., would be the same priest who, on November 22, 1963, performed the Last Rights for President John F. Kennedy.
