Pius and Lawrence Gibbar were brothers and our grand uncles, related to us through their marriages to our grand aunts, Mary Anna "Annie" (nee Belsha) Gibbar and Mary Pearl (nee Belsha) Gibbar, respectively.
PIUS GROVER MATTINGLY was born on November 22, 1892 in Belgique, Bois Brule Township, Perry County, Missouri, the son of Ferdinand James Mattingly and Mary Elizabeth (nee Redford) Mattingly. He was our grand uncle by marriage, the husband of our grand aunt Mary Anna (nee Belsha) Gibbar.
Pius registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. On his registration, he stated that he was the son of Ferd Mattingly, that he lived in Belgique, Missouri and he was single. Pius also claimed an exemption from the draft. His grounds were "dependents, father and mother." He was described as tall, slender, with brown eyes and dark hair.

Apparently, the brothers' exemptions were only temporary and the eventually both served in the army. The photos below were taken at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan, taken near the end of World War 1 in 1918. There is anecdotal evidence that neither brother served overseas.
