Early roots of the CALVERT branch of our family tree date back to approximately 1580 with the birth of our 10x Great Grandfather, George Calvert, in Yorkshire, England. George graduated from Trinity College, Oxford, at the age of 14 in 1593.

George married Anne Mynne, daughter of John Mynne of Hertfordshire, a Protestant, on November 22, 1604 at St. Peter's in Corhhill, London. He became the secretary and protege of Sir Robert Cecil, after whom he named his eldest son. His wife Anne died in 1622 and is buried at St. Martins-in-the-Fields, a Protestant church. George married his second wife, Joan (?), after 1622.

Calvert held many high offices and was very involved in the foreign affairs of the Crown, but the political atmosphere and religious intolerance became intolerable, and in 1625 Calvert resigned his position as one of two Secretaries of State. When he resigned, the King, James I, confirmed Calvert's position on the Privy Council, and George was appointed Baron Baltimore in county Longford, Ireland. He converted to Catholicism, probably in late 1624.

George was very involved in the colonization of the New World. He invested in the Virginia Company, then in the East India Company. He purchased land in at Ferryland on the Alvan Peninsula, Newfoundland and established a colony there called Avalon.

After the settlement at Avalon failed in 1629 due to an unusually harsh winter, Calvert tried to get a charter to establish a new colony in a warmer climate. He was denied a colony in Virginia, but he was final granted a charter for lands in Maryland. Unfortunately, it was too late, as Calvert had died five weeks earlier. His son Cecil, 2nd Baron Baltimore, inherited his father's title and lands. Cecil's younger brother, Leonard (our ancestor) was the first Proprietary Governor of the Maryland. The Calvert's were known for their religious tolerance, allowing Catholic refugees as well as others, to settle in Maryland.

George Calvert died on April 15, 1632, at the age of 54. He is buried at St Dunstan-in-the-West Church, Fleet Street, City of London Greater London, England. Although George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, never actually set foot in Maryland, he is considered its founder.wikitree.com

Early roots of the SEMMES (Simms) branch of our family tree date back to 1614 with the birth of our 8X Great Grandfather, Marmaduke, in Nantes, Pays de la Loire, France. Marmaduke immigrated to England before coming to America sometime before 1662, not as an indentured servant as many others did, but as a craftsman - a carpenter. He paid for his own passage, as proved in court in 1666, and was, therefore, granted an allottment of 50 acres of land. He established his homestead, "St. George's," on land purchased from a neighbor.

Marmaduke arrived as a single man, but eventually married Fortuna Metford (possible maiden name - Watson), the widow of Bulmer Metford. Fortuna may have also married a physician, William Champ, before marrying Marmaduke Semmes. They married in 1668.

Marmaduke played a role in the early General Assembly of Maryland. His name was first recorded in official records of the colony in April 1662, when ". . . was swore Marmaduke Semme Doore Keeper to the Upper howse."

The first member of the Semms/Simms branch of our family tree to arrive in Perry County, Missouri, highlighted in red, was our 4X Great Grandmother, Eleanor Simms.

Early roots of the SHANKS branch of our family tree date back to 1619 with the birth of our 8X Great Grandfather, John Shanks, Sr., in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

John Shanks, also spelled Shanke, an Angelican, was transported into the Province of Maryland prior to 1641 by Thoas Gerard, Esquire. On May 30, 1664 he was entitled to 50 acres of land after the completion of his term of indenture or eight years of servitude with Thomas Gerard.

In the Archives of Maryland, it states that John Shanks was a native of Dumfries, Scotland and on December 8, 1652, 200 acres on the west side of St. Clement's Bay (a tract called "Shanks") was patented to him.

Abigail Simon, the wife of John Shanks, was transported to Maryland in 1650 by Robert Brooke, Esquire in a group containing members of the Brooke family and several male and female servants.

On June 19, 1683, he gained possession of 300 acres called "Little Hackley,"

In Captains and Mariners of Early Maryland, Raphael Semmes makes the following statements about John Shanks:

"Among those who understood the language of the Susquehannocks was John Shanks. Shanks also understood the language of the Patuxent Indians. During one winter when there was danger of Indian raids, the Governor and his council ordered that John Shanks be employed as "Intelligence amongst the Indians living upon Patuxent River". When sometime later several Chotico and Patuxent Indians were being examined at St. Mary's regarding a murder at Pt. Lookout, John Shanks again acted as Interpreter."

In his will, written on June 19, 1663 and probated on February 16, 1684, Shanks was described as a "planter." He left his wife the 300 acres of Little Hackley in St. Clement's Manor and named her as his executrix. His son, John, was to receive the plantation on the death of his wife. His inventory stated he died on January 26, 1684. His estate was valued at 93.09.02 (?) and included three slaves and an Indian servant.

He stated in his will that the "Indian boy now living at my house named James Monticue had another year to serve. Then he was to be given a mare and 300 lengths of "Roane Oake" in goods or tobacco. "Roane Oake" were valuable white shell beads - called Wampum, the currency of the North American indians.

The first member of the Shanks branch of our family tree to arrive in Perry County, Missouri, highlighted in red, was our 3x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Shanks.
