The Civil War

CHARLES CARL BOHNERT was our 2x Great Uncle through the Bohnert line. He was born on June 24, 1845 in Renchen, Baden, Germany, the son of Caspar Bohnert and his first wife, Franciska (nee Meyer) Bohnert.

Charles entered the Civil War on October 30, 1864 when he joined Company C of the 50th Regiment of the Missouri Volunteer Infantry at Arnsberg, Missouri. At the time of his enlistment he was 19 years old and his rank was Private.​

According to his Regimental Descriptive Book, he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall. He had a fair complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. His birthplace was listed as Baden, Europe and his occupation was a farmer.

Civil War Service Documents

Charles' term of enlistment was for six months. He mustered out of Company C on October 30, 1864 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. However, because he had not yet served his full term, he was was transferred to Company G during his final month of service.​​​​ He was discharged from Company G, 50th Regiment on May 26, 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Widow's Pension Application

Charles applied for, and received, a military pension based on his military service. The rate of payment was eight dollars per month. He died of apoplexy on September 19, 1897. Charles' wife, Mary Teresa, applied for a Widow's Pension for herself and her three minor children. She was granted the pension at a rate of $30 per month.

Charles is buried in ​​​​St. Joseph's Cemetery, Apple Creek, Missouri. The inscription on his tombstone documents his service in the Civil War.
