Bohnert Census

William Bohnert and

Mary Elizabeth (nee Leible) Bohnert

~ Paternal Great Grandparents ~

The following census pages follow the history of WILLIAM BOHNERT and MARY ELIZABETH (nee LEIBLE) BOHNERT, our paternal grandparents, beginning when each of their names first appear in census records in 1860 and concluding in 1930, the last year for which either of them appear in the census records. Note that, although William was born before the 1850 census, his family has not been found documented in that year.

Included for each census is the full census record, as well as a map of the county indicating the township in which they lived at the time the census was taken. Misspellings of names on the census information record are frequent and are often due to inaccurate transcriptions of the original census documents as well as enumerator error.

The family is highlighted in gray. Additional, lighter highlighted areas indicate the households of close relatives.

William Bohnert

1845 - 1932

~ Paternal Great Grandfather ~

At the time of the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, William Bohnert was eleven years old. He was living in Cinque Hommes Township, Perry County, Missouri, with his mother, (Klementina) Elizabeth "Annie" (nee Hurst) Bohnert and his step-father (and uncle), Caspar Bohnert. William's father, Lucas Bohnert, died in 1852 and his mother remarried to his uncle.

Neither William, nor his father, Lucas, are found in the 1850 census.

Other individuals in the blended household included cousins Ignatius,  Charles, Ferdinand, Louis, and Barbara (children of Caspar and his first wife, Franciska Meyer), sibling Joseph, and half-siblings, Anthony, Moritz, and Andreas.

It is important to note that the Vincent Leible family lived on the adjacent property, including daughter, Elizabeth, who would later marry William Bohnert.

William Bohnert was actually listed twice in the 1870 Federal Census. In one census record, he was listed as living in Cinque Hommes Township, Perry County, Missouri, with his mother, Elizabeth (nee Hurst) Bohnert and his step-father (and uncle), Caspar Bohnert.

Other individuals in the blended household included cousins Ignatius,  Charles, and Ferdinand, and sibling Joseph. His half-siblings Anthony (Anton - 16), Moritz (14) and Andreas (12) were not listed as living in the Bohnert household in 1870. The reason is unknown.

In the second listing, he was found on the census record of Anthony and Eleanor Butz (see below).

In addition to being listed as living with his parents in Cinque Hommes Township in 1870, William Bohnert was also recorded as living on the Butz farm, also in Cinque Hommes Township.

Anthony (Anton) and Eleanor (Ellen) Butz were from Baden and close friends of the Bohnert family. William lived with them and helped on their farm. The couple had no children of their own. Anton Butz willed his farm, first, to his wife, and, after her death, to William.

William's uncle, Beda Bohnert and his wife, Cresentia (Behrle) Bohnert lived on a farm nearby.

After their marriage, William and his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Leible) Bohnert continued to live on the Butz farm.

Anton Butz died in 1878. After his death, Ellen Butz continued to lived in an adjacent residence until her death in 1882.

At the time of the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Mary Elizabeth Leible was fourteen years old. She was living in Cinque Hommes Township, Perry County, Missouri, with her father, Vincent Leible, and her father's second wife, Helena "Ellen" Riehl.

Her father's occupation was listed as farmer and his place of birth was listed as Baden.

Mary's grandfather, Vincent Leible, Sr., was no longer living at the time of the census, having died on June, 28, 1860. Other individuals living in the household included Elizabeth's siblings, William, August, and Henry, as well as her half-siblings, Rosa, John and Mary.

Although still living in Cinque Hommes Township, the Caspar Bohnert family was no longer living in the adjacent dwelling to the Leible family.

At the time of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, William Bohnert was 34 years old. He was living in Union Township, Perry County, Missouri with his wife, Elizabeth (Leible) Bohnert. The couple were married on January 5, 1875 and resided on the farm of close friends of the family, Anton and Ellen Butz.

Anton Butz left the farm in his will to his wife, Ellen, and, after her, to William Bohnert. Anton died in 1878. In the 1880 census, Ellen was listed as living in an adjacent dwelling. Ellen died in 1882. William and Elizabeth lived on the farm together until Elizabeth's death in 1912.

The only other individual listed as living in the home at the time was the couple's daughter, Maria Teresia, who was 7 months old at the time the census was taken.

Part of the 1880 census was misfiled with the agricultural census and was recovered in August, 2018. The recovered census included 633 residents, among them William and Elizabeth Bohnert.

At the time of the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, William Bohnert was 84 years old and was documented as living in the house of his daughter, Adela, and her husband, Louis Anselm in Chaffee, Kelso Township, Scott City, Missouri.

Although William was found on the Kelso Township census, it is probable that he was staying with various children. His grandson (our father and son of John Vincent Bohnert), James Bohnert, recalled his grandfather staying with their family on numerous occasions in Perryville.

William died on March 28, 1932, at the home of another one of his daughters, Clara, and her husband, Roman Ponder, near McBride, Missouri.

Note that there are several name misspellings in the census document.
