Anton was the child of a blended marriage. Before his birth, his father, Casper, had been married to Franciska Meyer, daughter of Joseph and Maria Boschert Meyer, and had 8 children. Of the 8 children, four did not survive infancy or young childhood.

Anton's father, Casper, and his wife, Francizka, arrived in America on October 13, 1846 with their two surviving sons, Ignaz and Charles. On September 17, 1852, Caspar and Francizka welcomed their daughter, Barbara.

By January 3, 1853, just three months later, records show that Casper married his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hurst (Anton's mother), widow of his recently deceased brother, Lucas. Exactly when and how his wife, Francizka, died is unknown. However, it had to be between September 17, 1852 - the birth of Barbara - and January 3, 1853, when Casper remarried.

The children of Caspar and Franziska (including those who did not survive infancy), were Anton's half brothers and sisters. They are as follows:

Anton's mother, Klementina Elizabeth Hurst Bohnert, suffered terrible tragedy before she married his father. In August of 1844, she and her husband, Lucas, lost their first son, a boy named John, at 10 months old.

Two more sons were born in the next few years, William and Joseph. Both of these boys lived to adulthood. Then, in October of 1849, Elizabeth and Lucas welcomed another boy and named him John after his deceased brother. Three years later, they lost him as well. The cause of his death is unknown.

Exactly one month later, they lost their infant daughter, Elizabeth. She was just under nine months old. One would have to assume that whatever affliction took John the prior month was also what caused Elizabeth's death.

It was only one month later that tragedy struck once again. On December 8, 1852, Elizabeth's husband, Lucas, died of unknown causes. Within three months she had lost her husband and two young children. She was left with two young children, William, seven years old, and Joseph, 5 years old, and no means of support.

With two young sons to care for, Elizabeth chose to remarry quickly, only one month later, to her recently widowed brother-in-law, Caspar, who - with an infant daughter and four young sons - needed a mother to care for his children. Including Anton, who was born just 11 months after his parents' marriage, Caspar and Elizabeth had five more children:

In the 1860 Federal census, when Anton was approximately 6 years old, the large family lived in the Cinque Hommes Township in Perry County, Missouri. Both his father, Caspar, and his mother, Elizabeth, were noted as coming from Baden.

Anton's father and older brothers were listed as farm laborers. The adjacent farm was owned by the Leible family, also from Baden, and consisted of parents Vincent and Martha (Maria Martha Boschert), children Teresa, William, August and Elizabeth and Vincent's father, Vincent Leible, Sr. It is safe to assume that these families knew each other well, both in their mother country and in Missouri.

The 1870 census noted the Bohnert family still lived in the Cinque Holmes Township, but for unknown reasons omitted the names of Anton (17), Moritz (14), Andrew (10) and August (7) from the register. In addition, the Lieble family was no longer listed as living on the adjacent property.

In 1880, the Bohnert family, minus Caspar who died in 1876, were, once again, adjacent to the Leible family. At the time of the census, Anton Bohnert was 26 and Rose (Rosa) Leible was 14 years old.

Rosalia Katherina (Rosa) was the daughter of Vincent Leible, Jr. and his second wife, Helena "Ellen" Riehl. Rosa's father immigrated to America from the small town of Renchen, Baden-Württemberg, and arrived in the Port of New Orleans on November 31, 1836. Her parents had married on April 25, 1864, two years after the death of Vincent's first wife, Mary Martha Boschert. Rose, their second daughter, was born two years after their marriage. She was baptized in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Apple Creek, Perry County, Missouri on June 6, 1966. Her Godparents were Joseph Leible and Elizabeth Bohnert.

In the 1860 federal census, the Vincent Leible family were recorded as living in the Cinque Hommes Township of Perry County, Missouri. They remained there after the death in of his first wife in 1862.

Living next to the Leibles at that time was the Casper Bohnert family. The families were both from Baden and knew each other well.

Four of Vincent Leible's children married children of Caspar Bohnert. In addition to Rosa and Anton, Rosa's half-sister, Elizabeth, married Anton's half-brother, William. Rosa's half-sister, Theresa, married Caspar's eldest son, Ignatius (Ignatz), and Maria Helen Leible, Rosa's sister, married Caspar's son, Andrew. Other, slightly less closely related members of the Leible and Bohnert families intermarried as well.

The 1870 census listed Rosa Leible as four years old. Also living in the house at the time were her parents, Vincent and Helen, her siblings, William, August, Elizabeth and Henry, and her full siblings, Agnes, John and Mary. At that time, the census did not record the Bohnerts living adjacent to the Leibles.

On November 21, 1888, Rosalia Catharina Leible married Anton Bohnert. Anton was 35 years of age and Rosalia was 22. The marriage was performed by Father Francis Krieger in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Apple Creek, Perry County, Missouri. Because Rose was under the legal age to marry, her mother, Helena, witnessed and gave her consent to the marriage.

Anton purchased land from his father's estate on September 7, 1885, but sold it in 1886. Unfortunately, the 1890 U.S. Federal Census was destroyed, so we don't know where the couple made their first home. However, by the 1990 census, they were documented as living in Union Township, Perry County, Missouri. Anton is listed as working in a flour mill (owned by his older brother, Ferdinand) and as having been unemployed for 6 months. There were several children already living in the household.

Together, Anton and Rosalia had a large family of 13 children. Two of the children died in early childhood, a son, Henry Anton was 2.5 years old when he died and a daughter, Emma Helena, died when she was two years old. The rest of the children lived relatively long lives.

In 1925, when Anton was 72 years of age, a fierce cyclone, now known as the Tri-State Tornado, ripped through southeast Missouri. This tornado holds the record as the deadliest one in United States history. Killing 695 people, the mile wide tornado traveled for 3 1/2 hours and 235 miles across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

Cape Girardeau was hard hit, as were Biehle, Annapolis, Mo, and DeSoto Ill. Many people were left homeless. During this cyclone, Anton, who was traveling in a wagon at the time, suffered a hip fracture and was unable to work from then until his death.

In the 1930 census, at the ages of 77 and 65 respectively, Anton and Rosa lived in Union Township in a home that they owned. None of their children were still living in the home.

Anton died in Perry County, Missouri on July 27, 1937 at the age of 83. The cause of death was Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis (kidney disease). He had been ill for approximately three months. His wife, Rosalia, lived in their home until her death in 1951. She suffered from cardiovascular and renal disease and died on February 26, 1951 from complications of pneumonia. She was 84 years old.

Both Anton and Rosa are buried in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Apple Creek, Perry County, Missouri.  See their graves by following the link at the bottom of the page.
