Revolutionary War

THOMAS SADLER was our 6X Great Grandfather through the Gibbarl line. Thomas was born in 1720, most likely in St. Andrew's Parish, Brunswick, Virginia. He is our earliest documented Sadler ancestor in the United States.

In 1742, Thomas married Rebecca Featherston. Rebecca was born in 1722 in Henrico, Virginia, daughter of Henry C. Featherston and Elizabeth Walthal.

There is documentary evidence as early as 1741 in Brunswick County, Virginia that Thomas' occupation was a land surveyor. He also owned considerable parcels of land.

Thomas Sadler took an Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity to the State of Virginia on October 10, 1777. A Legislative Petition record entitled "Oath of Affirmation" located in the Virginia State Library, contains his signature and states that he was a "Patriot" during the Revolutionary War. In a well-documented genealogy of the Sadler Family entitled Sadler/Saddler: A Record of the Family and the Descendants of Thomas Sadler, Jr. and Rebeccah Featherstone, the author, Joan Coker Smola, writes:

"The term "Patriot" means, Thomas supplied goods and money for the effort, but did not actually participate in the fighting as a soldier. At the time Thomas would have been about 58 years of age which would have been considered "older" by standards of that day. Surely, he was considered too old to fight as his religious affiliation would not have prevented or excused him from fighting."1

The documents below were used by descendants of Thomas Sadler to prove their ancestry to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). They show that Sadler supplied goods to the Revolutionary Army, although the documents appear to originate in nearby Amelia, County, Virginia. They show that Thomas Sadler supplied 28 bushels of wheat on March 15, 1781.

Thomas Sadler died in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1796.
